Building a Strategy for Success

“Success is not the result of spontaneous combustion… you must set yourself on fire first!”
--Reggie Leach

  1. Set Goals

    1. Long-Range
    2. Medium-Range
    3. Short-Range

It is often easiest if you start with the long-range goals, then work backwards from there. For example, if your long-range goal was to be hired as a full time software programmer at Microsoft, your medium-range goals might include working towards finishing your degree in Computer Science, and then achieving expert certification in C# programming. Short-term goals might involve getting good grades your first year and becoming active in community service, so that your chances of being awarded a scholarship to pay for your second year would be improved, as well as your resume, to distinguish you from other applicants for the same job.

  2. Build a Plan to reach those Goals

    1. Map out the steps that need to occur, like implementing better time management, or study skills.
    2. Put them on a timeline if possible

  3. Work the plan

    1. Take the steps, no matter how hard, inconvenient or costly! Start right away!
    2. Review and change your plan as necessary.

If you are applying for scholarships right now, the first three steps would be:

    1. Fill out FAFSA application
    2. Make an appointment with a counselor, at the Financial Aid desk in the RTC Administration building, to see about financial resources available to you at RTC.
    3. Search for other scholarships online (see Computer Science Scholarships Links Page)
    4. Then start working on steps towards your longer-range goals. Ask yourself- “What steps could I take during this coming year that would increase my chances of obtaining a scholarship for next year?”

  4. Suggestions and Examples

    1. Read about other successful people, like prior scholarship winners, or people who have been successful in your field. Think about how you could plan steps that follow their lead, and increase your chances of success!
    2. Read a summary of the 7 habits of highly successful people.
    3. Plan to do some networking and meeting people who may be helpful in your future (professional organizations, fraternal organizations, volunteer work, etc).
    4. Plan early to get involved in activities that build up your resume in these scholarship critical areas:
      1. Academic success
      2. School service/involvement
      3. Community Service/Volunteer work
      4. Leadership potential
